Arley Arboretum and Gardens

Meg.

This cute little arboretum was a last minute visit for a friend and I. When we arrived it was fairly quiet, bar the huge queue at the tearoom. We had booked online (which is cheaper) but unfortunately when we arrived the entrance lodge had a sign saying to go to the tea room for entry. We had somehow managed to time our arrival at the same time as a bunch of hungry cyclists, so by the time we made it to the till to get our wristbands we were 25 minutes passed our entry time (this was not a problem).

For us, the highlight of visiting the Arboretum and Gardens was the Italian Garden, which had a couple of pretty water features and at this time of the morning we had it to ourselves - it was very peaceful. When we returned a mere half hour later, it was quite the opposite - very busy with families playing in and around the water.

We spent no more than about 45 minutes wandering before we'd exhausted the grounds, so decided to go and try out the tearoom. As this was a last minute plan, I had not had time to 'coeliac dance' the tearoom before arrival, so we did all of this in person. I was pleased to find that I was able to have a gluten free scone and my vegan friend was able to have a vegan scone, both clear of cross contamination.

As for other items I am not so confident - I was told I could have bread but not toast, and although there were some gluten free cakes and each cake had its own stand and potentially knife, I don't think I observed hand washing between handling each one. I do feel that had they had warning of my arrival, they would have been more prepared.

Overall this was a nice and reasonably priced day out.

Going at the end of June meant that we were far too early for Autumn, and a bit late for Spring - I can't help but wonder if we'd get a totally different experience during these seasons?

I was not invited on this adventure, but well behaved dogs on leads are welcome!

The Woolpack

Ady & Meg.

This place is an absolute gem!

As per usual process we reached out to the pub in advance to check that they could cater to a Coeliac safely and their response was incredibly thorough - separate work space, utensils, fryer and even a pizza oven!

When we arrived, the staff were incredibly accommodating and reassuring, explaining that two staff members had been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. Their gluten free menu (pictured below) was huge, and wasn't even the only options available to us - all of the items on the Specials Board could be made gluten free, as could everything on their pizza menu!

Not being used to having so much choice, we opted for a pizza, lasagne, burger and lemon cake to share, and they were all delicious! And the price was incredibly reasonable!

Obviously as always, please use your own judgement - this is a restaurant which contains gluten and we completely appreciate that it's often the staff member that you deal with who makes the experience. On this occasion, we were very satisfied customers.

I enjoyed my visit here, and was pleased to be given a water bowl.

Howgill and Winder

Ady & Meg.

This hike has amazing views given how short a hike it is! Once you have found somewhere to park the views are almost instant, and just get better and better the higher you climb!

It is quite a steep hike, but the path is obvious and we completed it in just 1.5 hours. We hardly saw anyone on this walk, which was surprising given that it was a beautiful Saturday morning (although that said, if it had been busy, parking would have been a nightmare!)

I enjoyed this walk, although there were a lot of sheep on route so it was a good job that I was kept on lead.

Whernside and Ribblehead

Ady & Meg.

If you know anything about the Yorkshire Dales, you are bound to know about the three peaks. Some super fit people choose to do all three in the same hike - 25 miles, taking the average person around 12 hours.

We on the other hand opted to do each peak on a different day, enjoying each one for what it was separately. On the day that we did this one, the weather wasn't at it's best. The views of nearby Ingleborough were still fantastic though, as were the views of the Viaduct which is close to where the walk starts and ends.

The viaduct is still in use, so you may well see a train go over it. Part of the route does go near the train track, so please bare this in mind if walking with children/pets.

I enjoyed this hike, especially as there was somewhere to paddle near to the start.

Stainforth and Catrigg Force

Ady & Meg.

This is a great short hike, with amazing views considering how little effort it requires. We opted for this hike after completing another longer walk, as we weren't quite ready for a rest.

The walk heads up through some woodland, and walks across farmland with lovely views of nearby peaks. It then drops down into some more woodland, where you can find the waterfall (and need to go slightly off route to reach the bottom of the waterfall).

It is then just a short walk back to the carpark. There were signs to another waterfall from here, so you could absolutely extend your walk if you wanted to.

Flossie.

I enjoyed this walk, especially being able to play in the water at the waterfall. There was one ladder stile on route which I needed lifting over.

This peak is actually the smallest (in both height and hike length) but still isn't for the faint-hearted, as it requires a scramble to reach the top. Some of the rocks are quite big, so require hands and knees (or a lift from Ady in Flossie's case).

The views are well worth the effort though, and once at the top it is a fairly gentle path down.

As most three-peakers start with this peak, this hike (and the car park) has the potential to be incredibly busy. We set off very early on a Friday morning, and we would definitely recommend avoiding this hike on a weekend if you can.

I enjoyed this walk, but would have struggled to make it if Ady hadn't been able to lift me.

Darlings of Settle

Ady & Meg.

This Thai restaurant was quite the surprise! Based on the 2nd floor above a shop, you could easily miss them!

They do not do themselves justice when it comes to advertising, and we only found out about them because a previous guest wrote about them in our Airbnb Guest book!

As per usual process we contacted them in advance to find out whether they could cater to a Coeliac safely, and were told that most of their menu was naturally gluten free / that they could easily avoid cross contamination.

We pre-ordered over the phone and had a takeaway as Flossie wasn't allowed in the restaurant. We were thrilled at how many gluten free vegetarian options there were, and the portions were huge!

Obviously as always, please use your own judgement - this is a restaurant which contains gluten and we completely appreciate that it's often the staff member that you deal with who makes the experience. On this occasion, we were very satisfied customers.

I was not allowed inside here, so waited in the car with Ady.

We on the other hand opted to do each peak on a different day, enjoying each one for what it was separately. That said, this hike was far from for the faint hearted. Taking us around 6 hours to complete, we considered this a strenuous hike and we certainly were ready for a sit down afterwards!

The route itself was fairly easy to follow, first taking in the waterfall in Clapham, past the cave (which you can pay to enter / extend your day if you wish) and then up into the mountains. The views from the top are stunning, and include being able to see the other two peaks and Ribblehead Viaduct.

We saw very few people on this hike, but we are sure if we had done this on a weekend we would have seen a few more.

Flossie.

I loved this walk, particularly when I managed to roll in something stinky! 🦊💩 I was not so keen on the bath I was made to take afterwards though!

Bizzie Lizzie's, Swadford Street

Ady & Meg.

This is a great fish and chip shop!

They have two branches in Skipton, but we only visited the Swadford Street one as from the advertising we believe that this is the only one which offers gluten free.

Their website clearly states that they are Coeliac UK Accredited and the measures that they take to ensure that, although there is gluten on the premises, they can avoid cross contamination.

When we arrived at the shop, placing a gluten free order was clearly no issue for the server. Meg overheard him ask the kitchen for gluten free items, and tell them that it was for a Coeliac - clearly our food was being cooked to order and they were implementing special measures.

We had our items to takeaway (there is a restaurant if you wish to eat in) and they came in boxes labelled gluten free. We thoroughly enjoyed our chips cheese and beans (which weren't actually on the menu) and the batter on the gluten free cod was perfect!

We 100% recommend this place.

Janet's Foss, Gordale Scar, Malham Tarn and Malham Cove

Ady & Meg.

This is a great longer walk with a mix of scenery. We did the route in reverse to AllTrails, as rain was forecast and we were concerned that the limestone around Malham Cove would be slippery (note, it's a bit slippery even in the dry!). This meant that even though we arrived early, by the time we reached the waterfalls they were quite busy.

That aside, for the majority of the walk we hardly saw anyone, and even though the weather was poor the views were still lovely.

This walk is very steep in places, so sure-footedness is needed. It is not for the faint-hearted.

Flossie.

I enjoyed this walk, especially being able to dip my paws in Malham Tarn!

Harts Head Hotel

Ady & Meg.

This pub does not do itself justice when it comes to advertising it's gluten free offerings!

We enquired following hearing that they did gluten free pies (if ordered 24h in advance). As per our standard practice, we checked their procedures when catering to someone with coeliac disease. The response we received was very thorough, confirming that they use separate utensils and fryers when preparing gluten free food, to avoid cross contamination.

We pre-ordered gluten free vegetable pies, and when we arrived were amazed to see the size of their gluten free menu - which was not online!

The pies were delicious and very filling - we only had pudding as we felt it would be rude not to! 🤪

Flossie was also very well treated, being allowed in the bar area (not the restaurant) with free water and biscuits and the option to buy an array of other goodies!

Obviously as always, please use your own judgement - this is a restaurant which contains gluten and we completely appreciate that it's often the staff member that you deal with who makes the experience. On this occasion, we were very satisfied customers.

I loved visiting this pub, as I was given treats, a water bowl and even my own dinner!

Stone House Hotel to Hawes

Ady & Meg.

This is a lovely walk if you want something quick and easy. Unfortunately we could not complete the walk as was intended, firstly because we weren't happy to leave our car on a verge, and secondly because the foot bridge over the river was closed.

But, with a slight detour we managed to rejoin the route and still enjoyed lovely views of the river and surrounding hills.

I loved this walk because I got to have a good swim!

Gunnerside Gill

Ady & Meg.

This is a great walk that starts at the tiny village of Gunnerside. We saw amazing views merely driving to the carpark on this day! The walk is fairly easy, exploring the old lead mine and then heading up into the hills for lovely views of the village.

The route is circular, with an additional there-and-back section - on this bit, we would suggest that you don't go any further than the point where you lose sight of the two derelict houses facing each other (these will be behind you). At that point the path gets very narrow and there isn't much to see.

Flossie.

I enjoyed this walk, particularly the access to water at the beginning!

This is a great walk with lovely views on a clear day. It is a fairly strenuous walk, with quite a few stiles to climb over (some of which were quite difficult with a larger dog, but to the gaps being very narrow!). We only saw a couple of other hikers on this route, but did have to detour slightly due to some cows blocking the path.

Bright and Sunny Dales Townhouse

Ady & Meg.

This Airbnb was such a great find! It is located on a quiet estate, with the start of the three peaks walk and Malham just a short drive away, and walking distance to several dog friendly pubs.

The kitchen, although small, came equipped with everything we needed to cook basic meals, the bed was super comfortable and it had a great shower (very high water pressure in this area!).

Overall this was a great base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales, so we 100% recommend.

Flossie.

I liked this house as it had a small enclosed garden, which meant I did not have to be on lead.

Yorkshire Dales Farmhouse Ice Cream

Ady & Meg.

We were thrilled to find this ice cream van whilst out on our adventures! We hadn't discovered it during previous research, so when Meg approached them she expected the usual awkwardness. However, the staff confidently pointed her to the allergen list (pictured below) which not only stated that all the ice cream was gluten free, but also stated that if you are worried about cross contamination the staff will wash their hands and utensils and take ice cream from a brand new sealed container!

We did so, and ordered our ice cream in pots rather than cones - perfect!  😍

Flossie.

I didn't really care for the ice cream stop - I just wanted to get back to playing in the river!

Bolton Abbey and the River Wharfe

Ady & Meg.

This is a great option if you fancy a fairly flat walk. The route follows the paths up and down the river, with plenty of bridges if you ever fancy swapping sides (plus some stepping stones if you are feeling brave!). The area around the Abbey was incredibly busy, but the paths along the river were much quieter.

This walk was further improved by the presence of an icecream truck which had a clear understanding of how to cater to coeliacs. We were so impressed that we have made a separate review for them here

I loved this walk, especially as there were so many opportunities to play in the river! 😍

Hens on the Hill

Ady & Meg.

This place is such a great idea - a self service vending machine containing items a lot more fulfilling than the usual chocolate bars and crisps!

This business started as a vending machine selling their free range eggs, but has now grown to sell a range of items from other local independent businesses. One of these businesses is Little Liv's bakery, a completely gluten free bakery!

Little Liv's bakery is owned by the sister of a Coeliac, and the kitchen is 100% gluten free. Items are packaged at the bakery before being transported to the vending machine, and the items available change on a weekly basis - we particularly enjoyed the hazelnut cheesecake, raspberry blondie and trifle!

At the time of writing this, Hens on the Hill are open 7 days a week, 7am - 7pm, making it super convenient to pop by. You simply order your goodies on the touch screen (where everything in stock is listed, including the option to see the ingredients) and once paid the items are dispensed.

On our visit we focussed on the Little Liv's goodies, but there were many other items on sale (eggs, smoothies, breads, meat, pies, cheeses off the top of our heads). We cannot advise as to whether these were gluten free, but we found the owner of Hens on the Hill very helpful when contacted in advance on social media if you do have any queries.

Bowood House & Gardens

Meg.

This beautiful house and gardens makes for a lovely day out. On the day we went the weather was not good, but we still had a great time and there were lots of places to shelter from the rain.

If you fancy a slightly longer walk than just the house and gardens, it is set in 100 acres of parkland, and from here we enjoyed views of the lake, finding the secret waterfall and exploring the grotto!

In Barcelona you will find yourself spoilt for choice when it comes to 100% gluten free bakeries. This bakery was a bit different to others, as we would describe it as more of a dessert shop. We opted for a rookie (a big cookie) - the red berry one was particularly delicious!

Teleferic del Port - Torre de Sant Sebastia

Ady & Meg.

The views from this cable car / the cable car ports were absolutely stunning!

That said, this was a very different experience to our trip on the cable cars at Montjuic a few days though.

To begin with, the queues were HUGE. And it wasn't really obvious quite how slowly they were moving until we had already paid. There are three separate queues; to pay, for the lift, and then for the cable car itself. All in all we must have queued for around an hour.

The next big difference was the sheer lack of cable cars - there were two! 🤣 This meant we definitely did not have the luxury of having a cable car to ourselves, and where you stood was luck of the order that you managed to get on - unfortunately we were last on, so had the spot that the other 13 people didn't want. 🤣

That said, the views were still amazing, especially from the cable car ports (and maybe from the cable car itself if you manage to get a better spot 🤣) and for that reason alone we recommend this.

We just hope you are lucky and manage to do this on a quieter day!

Port Olimpic to San Sebastian Beach

For this walk we first started by exploring Port Olimpic. From here you have views of beaches either side, as well as the harbour. There was also a market on the day we went (a Sunday). From here, we followed the coast to San Sebastian beach - all in all, we spent around an hour or so on this activity.

Although we enjoyed this walk, we did find the whole area to be incredibly busy. We would therefore recommend that this be completed in the early morning or on a week day, for a slightly more tranquil experience.

Hanai Vegana - Gluten Free & Vegan Bakery

Ady & Meg.

In Barcelona you will find yourself spoilt for choice when it comes to gluten free bakeries. This one, although wasn't our favourite, was particularly impressive because as well as being 100% gluten free, it was also 100% vegan.

This meant that we could order many items that we would never usually get to have, for example a sausage roll and cheese and ham slice! These were served warm and were delicious.

We found the staff to be helpful, and although there isn't a proper seating area, because it was quiet we were able to grab a couple of stools at the back of the bakery to enjoy our purchases.

Casa Mila, also known as La Pedrera, is an apartment building designed by Gaudi. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for it's curved stone facade and chimneys on the roof.

We found this to be the quietest of all the Gaudi sites we visited in Barcelona - perhaps because we went when they first opened on a Sunday?

We did not spend long here (around 45 minutes) and personally we preferred the other Gaudi sites (although we did enjoy the attic and roof).

This skyscraper primarily houses offices for multiple businesses, but at the top has an indoor viewing platform open to the public for panoramic city views.

To be honest, the views are not what earned this activity it's 5 out of 5 rating (they were nice, but there are loads of good views in Barcelona). What we really enjoyed was the extra activity that we paid for - Cloud Cities.

This 'interactive artwork' is a 'walkable' (climbable) sculpture, suspended from the ceiling. This activity is not for the faint hearted, especially as some of the 5,000 nodes are see-through! We would also suggest that you need to be fairly fit and agile to complete this - and you probably shouldn't wear a dress to do so! 🤣

Visiting this place was one of the highlights of our trip!

Sagrada Familia has been under construction since 1882 and apparently is due to be completed by 2026. When we arrived and saw the scaffolding on the outside, we were not expecting great things.

There is a large pond just across the road from the front of it which makes for some nice photos. When we visited we were one of the first to enter the temple, and it truly was a 'wow' moment. The stained glass windows were the most beautiful ones we'd seen, and they filled the room with colour.

You can also pay extra to climb one of the towers, to get views out over Barcelona and a closer look at the outside of the temple. We opted for the tower on the Passion facade. The tower was accessed via a lift up, and then we gradually walked the narrow spiral staircase down.

My Fucking Restaurant

Ady & Meg.

Let's be honest - we are not usually the 'fine dining' type. But this restaurant was 100% gluten free, with a naughty name - how could we not?! 🤣

Understandably, the service we received here was the best of all of the restaurants we ate at in Barcelona. It was also our most expensive meal, but in the grand scheme of taster menus we believe this one to be on the cheaper side.

My Fucking Restaurant offered two taster menus, a meat version and a vegetarian version - we obviously went for the vegetarian. The photos below show all the food we received - most items were  small plates that we shared, but we certainly didn't leave feeling hungry!

We only got this cable car as a mode of transport to visit Montjuic Castle (which you can also get to by road/walking) - but we are so glad that we did! In fact, we could argue that this is an activity in itself, and you wouldn't even need to visit the castle if you didn't want to!

We're not sure if it was the time of day that we went, but the cable cars weren't busy (in comparison to how many there were) and we were able to have a cabin to ourselves. Today it is a free public space for people to enjoy the views, and they really are stunning. Much of the area is now covered with graffiti, but as we're sure you will agree, it certainly adds to the photos!

Parc Guell

Ady & Meg.

It is arguably impossible to go to Barcelona and not see at least some of Gaudi's work. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, full of whimsical architecture and colour, and you could easily spend a few hours wandering around admiring its beauty.

Whilst you can explore the park on your own, we opted for a guided tour, as it gave access to parts of the park that you couldn't access via a normal ticket.

Unfortunately the park was extremely busy on the day we went, and we don't believe that this can be remedied by going early (although locals are allowed entry into the park before tourists).

Grosso Napoletano Senza Glutine

Ady & Meg.

In Barcelona you are spoilt for choice of 100% gluten free restaurants, but in our opinion this one had the best gluten free pizza bases!

Like many restaurants in Barcelona, this one has several branches but this location is the one which is 100% gluten free.

This is the only restaurant that we visited twice, but we did find that this place had fewer vegetarian options compared to other restaurants we visited (although as you can see from the photos, we certainly did not starve! 😍🤣)

Basilica del Sagrat Cor Tibidabo

Ady & Meg.

There are many panoramic views to be seen in Barcelona - but this Basilica is located at the highest point, so is a must visit. The building's neo-gothic style makes it rather unusual compared to other churches in the city, and the views from the top are breathtaking.

Beneath it is a theme park, which was not open on the day that we went, but you could absolutely pair this with your visit.

Parc del Laberint d'Horta to Tibidabo

Ady & Meg.

Parc del Laberint d'Horta is a pretty park - we did not plan to spend long here, as we were merely passing through on our walk up onto the hills and across to Tibidabo. But, we found many paths here were closed off (we assumed because of either landslides or work being done?) so ended up exploring more than we'd planned just trying to find another route! 🤣

Once out of the park and up onto the hills, we had stunning views out over Barcelona. Barcelona is very busy whenever you go, so it was so nice to have some peace and quiet - we literally only saw a handful of cyclists on our walk!

Our walk finished at Basilica del Sagrat Cor Tibidabo - which deserves it's own post 😍
