Where to park

We parked in several locations during our day in Elan Valley. First of all we parked in the paid Elan Valley Visitor Centre car park, to use the toilet and complete a walk:

We then drove here to view the Claerwen Dam (free car park):

And then we drove here to view Craig Goch Dam (road parking):

Ady & Meg.

A day out in the Elan Valley offers so much choice, so much so that we really struggled to plan this one. There are so many different ways to spend a day here dependent on how energetic you are feeling.

We started our day parking at the Elan Valley visitor centre and following the Nant Y Gro trail instructions from the Elan Valley website. This trail allowed us to explore Caban Goch Dam from above and below as well as some other stunning views of the Valley.

After this we drove to Claerwen Dam - the Top Gear fans amongst us will recognise this as the Dam Richard Hammond climbed up using a landrover and a winch! We spent around 20 minutes walking around this Dam, but you could easily extend your stay by completing a walk in this area / having lunch on one of the picnic benches etc.

From here we then drove to our favourite Dam - Craig Goch. This Dam is by far the most beautiful, with viewpoints from either side and from above by simply crossing the road and heading up the opposite bank. We spent around half an hour here, but again you could easily extend this by completing another walk in the area.

We visited Elan Valley in January, after a long spell of rain. This meant that the Dams were at the best - well and truly overflowing! Elan Valley is worth a visit at any time of year, but if visiting in the summer months / after a period of drier weather, be aware that the dams present a very different (dry) vibe.

Flossie.

All this water and not one place that I was allowed to swim in! ☹
