Weekend in Cornwall, England

Published on 31 May 2024 at 07:00

For this adventure, we spent the weekend in a converted Shepherd's Hut in Duloe, Cornwall.

We both took the Friday off work to travel down (with a couple of stops along the way) and headed home on the Sunday afternoon.

We managed to do a few walks over the weekend and even have a couple of coeliac-safe meals out (in Somerset on Friday and Sunday)

Day 1 (Friday)

We started our weekend by stopping off at Rumwell Farm Shop and Cafe for lunch.

This is one of our favourite places to stop whenever passing through Taunton.

Rumwell prepare their gluten free food in a gluten free kitchen and have a great range of vegetarian options.

Ady opted for the GF Jackfruit Burger and Meg had the GF Lasagne.

Whenever we stop at Rumwell we can't help but buy a stack of gluten free cakes and doughnuts (they make for great on the road snacks!)

It was then around a 1.5 hour drive to our next stop, which was at Burrator Reservoir to stretch our legs after a long drive.

This was a fantastic place to stop on the way down to Cornwall. The walk took about 2.5 hours including a few photo stops and Flossie swimming spots.

It was then just over an hour drive to the Airbnb.

Unfortunately we got a bit lost in Plymouth and ended up heading over the Tamar Bridge three times (costing £2.60 for our mistake!) before taking the correct turn. This extended our journey slightly as we hit this during rush hour.

The last 3-ish miles to the Shepherds Hut was down an incredibly narrow one lane and we had to reverse the car back up the hill quite a long way to let a van pass.

Having got to the Airbnb a little later than expected we parked up and had a short walk down to the Shepherd's Hut.

The area was very quiet and private, which was exactly what we were looking for.

Once we had finally moved all of our stuff in to the Shepherd's Hut (this took a couple of trips back and forth to the car), we sat outside and enjoyed a couple of Rumwell cakes with the views over the fields. 😋

Day 2 (Saturday)

We started our second day nice and early with a trip to Polperro.

Due to the time of day (about 8am) the town was very quiet and it was lovely to be able to explore in peace and get lots of photos along the way.

We did have an online walk planned in Polperro, however after following it for a little bit we gave up as the directions were not clear.

We instead decided to just explore. This worked out well and gave us some good views over the fishing village.

After a couple of hours, we were ready to move on to our next stop. By this point it had gotten extremely busy, so we were glad to have arrived early.

Our next stop of the day was a 15 minute drive to Looe.

The AllTrails route we had chosen actually started in Talland Bay, but it literally passed through a carpark in Looe, so we decided to start the loop from there instead.

This walk took a few hours and although the majority of it was great, the last part took us over farmland.

This meant the sea views disappeared and became a little monotonous (if you have time, you may wish to make it a there-and-back walk following the coast instead?)

Once back in Looe, we visited a fish and chip shop which offered an amazing choice of coeliac-safe items!

We ate our chips in the car before heading back to the airbnb.

Once back at the Airbnb, we fired up the hot tub.

This required a lot of logs (extra purchased on site) and seemed to take an awfully long time.

There was also no thermometer to monitor the temperature of the hot tub (usually you are told to wait until it reads 36 degrees)

We got in after around 4 hours of heating, for the water to still be quite cold - so we quickly gave up, jumped in the shower and called it a night.

Day 3 (Sunday)

On our third day we got up nice and early to 'move out' of the Airbnb and get ready for the journey home. This wasn't quite the end of our weekend as we had a few more things planned on route.

Our first stop was only around a 30 minute drive from the Airbnb.

From the start of this walk there were great far reaching views, and the old ruins of the copper mines added to the scenery.

This walk had a good variation of uphill and flat and was definitely enough of a challenge to build up an appetite for our next stop.

It was then another 1.5h drive to Rumwell Farm Shop for lunch. This is a great place to stop off when on a road trip, as it is so close to the M5.

It was a Sunday, which meant they were doing a carvery.

Carverys / buffets are often not safe for Coeliacs due to cross contamination, so we were pleased that staff were happy to plate up ours in the kitchen. We loved our nut roast and were very excited to also get gluten free yorkshire puddings!

It was a great way to end our long weekend in Cornwall.
