Tidenham Tunnel

Where to park

We parked in a layby here - there is room for only about 3 or 4 cars:

Directions of walk

On the opposite side of the track to the parking is a public footpath. Follow this over the old railway bridge and you'll eventually come to the tunnel. The tunnel is 1km long and if you continue through the tunnel you will end up in Tintern.

We walked as far as the Old Wireworks Tramway Bridge and then retraced our steps back to the car, but you could cross the bridge and explore Tintern if you wish to extend the walk.

Equally if you are lucky enough to have two cars, you could park one at each side to save making this a there and back walk.

Ady & Meg.

This is a great walk for a not-so-great weather day, as so much of it is 'undercover'. The route is mostly flat but inside the tunnel can be a little disorientating due to the dim light (and the surprise of other people / bikes seemingly appearing out of nowhere!).

Please note, the tunnel closes from 1st October to 31st March each year to protect the bat population.

Previously the tunnel has only been open during the daytime, but for 2024 there are times where it is also open overnight. You can find more details including other options for parking here:

Flossie.

I enjoyed walking through the tunnel, although felt a bit frightened when things appeared out of the darkness!

However, outside of the tunnel there were loads of sticks to cheer me up.
